Self-care Activities I Enjoy

Since I turned 30, I have been prioritizing myself more and more each year. Now that I am 34, I have built a list of places I frequent for self care activities I enjoy as well as items I use for self soothing. So of course I had to share it with you all in hopes that you too can begin making yourself a priority!

Hair

First up, let’s talk about hair. When it comes to getting my “do done” I stick with only a couple of stylists. As a naturalista, it is important that whoever touches my hair knows how to handle all of this glory.

  • Le Peacock Salon: This salon specializes in natural hair and every time I leave the chair, I am in love with my hair. They prioritize healthy hair and provide you with a home regimen that is easy to implement between visits.
  • Jayess Braids: This stylist is located downtown and is definitely worth the drive! She is professional, friendly, and will make the braids you’ve been dreaming of come to life. Her attention to detail is impeccable and will leave you in awe every time.

Hair Removal

  • B2B Wax: Whether you need your brows sculpted or a Brazilian wax, this is the place for you! This is another black-owned business that is centrally located in Colerain, OH. It is easy to schedule an appointment with their online booking platform. All of the staff are friendly, while working quickly and efficiently.

Nails

Now, when it comes to nails, I have finally found a salon that caters to natural nails. I have only had acrylic nails once in my life and it was an immediate “no” for me. Since then I’ve tried shellac and powder, yet neither one lasted long enough for me. I also did not like the drill being used on my nails because it weakened them. And then I discovered…

  • Spruce: Spruce is all about keeping your natural nails healthy. You won’t find any nail drills or acrylic in their shop. And speaking of the shop, it is very clean and it does not smell like chemicals. The staff is friendly and timely. I have never waited more than 10 minutes for my nail tech and the estimated time of service is accurate. The best part? My nails last for 3 weeks!

Skincare

One of the first things I began doing on my self-care journey was getting intentional about taking care of my skin. To learn more about my skincare journey, read this post! The only person I now trust with my skin is…

  • Skin By Brownlee and Co.: This company is black-owned and located in Silverton, OH. Sylvia, the owner, is very knowledgeable and has her own products that are just right for my melanated, acne-prone skin. She is very patient and will curate a regimen that is specific to you. Some of her products are sold at Target and she also does virtual consultations!

Body Therapy

The magic of a massage is absolutely one of the best feelings! Getting a massage is one of my favorite self-care activities because it instantly relieves the stress that my body holds. Two of my favorite locations include:

  • Cyncere Handz: This is another black-owned woman company who provides an array of services at reasonable prices. Booking is easily accomplished on the online platform and the owner, Canyse, provides a soothing, calm environment during the appointment.
  • The Woodhouse Day Spa: While I have only experienced this place once, I know that I will definitely be back! This spa is a little more pricey, but they truly set up a relaxing ambience. Massage packages include a robe and complimentary drinks that make you feel luxurious. And the massage is customized to your specific needs.

Intellectual Wellness

Lastly, one of my favorite pastimes that takes care of my mental well-being is reading!

  • Cincinnati Public Library: Although, I absolutely enjoy purchasing my own books, sometimes it is not feasible. That’s when the library has me covered. It is easy to sign-up for a card and I love that I am able to use it on e-books as well.
  • Amazon: When I am able to purchase books, Amazon is my go to. I enjoy the 2-day shipping and my husband bought me a Kindle back in 2011 that I still use today! Some of my most recent reads include:
